Employer branding videos: how to record content that attracts talent

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

What an employer branding video is, why companies use it to attract talent and how to record it in a studio without it looking like an HR ad.

5 min reademployer branding video to attract talent

I talk to more and more HR teams and founders who want to record video showing what it is like to work at their company. It is not a traditional job ad: it is content that shows the real team, the real space and the real day to day, so that whoever watches it can decide whether they want to be part of that.

This type of video is called employer branding and it works because today a candidate researches a company the way they research a product before buying it. They check LinkedIn, they check Glassdoor, they check the team's Instagram. If all they find is a job posting with bullet points, they lose interest before they start.

What an employer branding video is and why it matters

An employer branding video does not sell a position, it sells what it is like to work there. It can be a team member explaining what they do day to day, an office tour, or the founder explaining why they run things the way they do. The difference from a classic corporate video is the tone: close, without the institutional communication script.

It matters because the hiring process no longer starts at the interview. It starts when someone searches for the company name before sending their CV. If they find real content (faces, voices, workspace) they arrive at the interview with more interest and fewer doubts. If they find nothing, they decide with the only information they have: the salary and the job title.

How to record employer branding content that works

Real team stories, not HR ads

The video that works best is not starring the HR department reading out corporate values. It stars someone from the team explaining, in their own words, why they stayed, what surprised them when they joined or what they would do differently. We record several short takes of each question and keep the one that sounds like a conversation, not a prepared speech.

Format and length designed for where it will be published

A three-minute video for the careers page does not work the same on LinkedIn, where it competes with short content. From each session we produce one long cut for the careers site and several vertical clips of 30-60 seconds for LinkedIn and Instagram, each focused on a single idea: culture, projects, team or benefits.

Different voices, not just the CEO

The founder or CEO can open the video, but if all the voices come from leadership, the message sounds like corporate communications. Including someone who has been in the role for six months, a team manager and someone from a different department gives real variety and lets a candidate see themselves in at least one of those people.

Common mistakes

  • A locked script that sounds read instead of told.
  • Recording only the CEO or leadership, with no voices from the rest of the team.
  • A single long video with no short clips for social media.
  • Recording at the office without looking after sound or light, which hurts credibility.
  • Not showing the real workspace, just faces in a static shot.
  • Publishing it once and not repeating the format from time to time.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to record an employer branding video?

Between 2 and 3 hours to record 3-4 testimonials and cover several angles of each question. If you also want footage of the team at work, allow half an hour more.

Do we need a locked script for each person?

No, a list of questions is better. Each person answers in their own words and in editing we keep the take that sounds most natural.

What formats do you deliver?

A main cut for the web or careers page and several short vertical clips ready for LinkedIn and Instagram.

Can we record at our office instead of in the studio?

We can, but the result depends heavily on the light and sound of the space. In the studio we control both from minute one, so the video comes out at a professional level without depending on your office conditions.
