What to Ask a Recording Studio in Madrid Before You Book

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

What to ask a recording studio before booking a session in Madrid: equipment, timing, direction, deliverables and terms worth clarifying.

5 min readwhat to ask a recording studio before booking

Almost every studio shows you nice photos and an hourly price. Few tell you what happens between the moment you pay and the moment you have publishable videos. That's where the money gets lost: in what nobody asked before booking.

At A0Studios we get asked the same questions every time, and the good ones arrive late, halfway through the session. This is the list I'd go through before signing anything with any recording studio in Madrid, ours included.

Why it pays to ask before you book

Two studios with the same hourly price can deliver opposite results. One hands you a space and a camera that's switched on. The other directs you, tells you what to shoot and gives you back material ready to publish or drop into an ad.

The hourly price is only one part. What counts is the cost per useful piece. If you walk out of 3 hours with 3 videos that don't work, you've paid more than someone who walks out with 12 that do. The right questions let you compare that before you spend.

The questions worth asking

Who directs the session, and on what criteria

Ask whether someone directs you or whether you just get the space and a technician. Ask too what experience that person has with ads and content that sells. A good director knows which hook opens a video and which shot is surplus. That isn't improvised on set.

What equipment the price includes

Camera, lenses, microphones, lighting, teleprompter and backdrops. Ask them to put it in writing. A typical setup for brand content is a Sony A7 with two microphones and studio lighting. If anything is charged separately, better to know today than on the invoice.

What you receive at the end and how soon

There are three scenarios: raw footage only, footage with editing, or full production with script and direction. Ask about delivery format, resolution, vertical and horizontal versions, and turnaround. And how many rounds of changes are covered by the price, because that's where extras tend to appear.

What to ask about terms and logistics

  • How long the session really lasts: whether setup and teardown count within the hours you pay for.
  • What happens if you need to cancel or move the date, and how much notice is free of charge.
  • How many people can come into the studio and whether there's a limit on guests or crew.
  • Where it is, how to get there and whether there's a dressing room or an area to change and wait.
  • Whether you can record ads, organic content and a VSL in the same session, or whether each format is booked separately.
  • Who keeps the rights to the recorded material and whether you can use it in paid ads.

How we handle it at A0Studios

We're at Ronda de Atocha 16, seventh floor, in central Madrid. Before you book we have a short call to find out what you want to sell and to whom. With that we tell you how many pieces fit in the session and which service fits: recording only, recording plus editing, or full production.

I direct the session myself with a sales mindset, because I work with Meta and TikTok ads and I know what opens a video that converts. We edit in DaVinci Resolve and deliver in vertical and horizontal. We've worked with IFEMA, the Madrid Chamber of Commerce and Cinesa, so we know what a real deadline is.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours do I need to book for a first session?

For a first session, 2 to 3 hours is usually enough if you arrive with a script. That's enough time to record 8 to 12 short pieces. For a VSL or a long piece, it's worth booking more and rehearsing beforehand.

Should I come with the script done, or will the studio help me?

It depends on the service. With recording only, you bring the script. With full production, we work on it with you before the session. What we don't recommend is arriving with nothing: you end up paying for camera hours to decide what to say.

Can I use what's recorded in paid ads?

You should be able to, but ask and get it in writing. If there's music, voice actors or outside people involved, check their permissions too. On our projects the material is yours to use organically and in Meta or TikTok Ads.

What should I bring on the day of the session?

The script or the topics, your chosen outfit with an alternative or two, the product if there is one, and a list of the pieces with their destination. If you bring all that, your time on camera goes much further.
