What a sizzle reel is and when it makes sense to shoot one
What a sizzle reel is, how it differs from an aftermovie and when it makes sense to shoot one to sell the energy of an event, a launch or a brand in under two minutes.
A sizzle reel is a short video that condenses the best of an event, a product or a brand into under two minutes. It doesn't tell a linear story: it hooks with rhythm, image and sound to leave a specific feeling in the viewer, not a complete explanation of what happened.
At A0Studios we mainly shoot it for agencies and marketing teams who need to show the energy of an event (a trade fair, a conference, a launch) without waiting weeks for a long video. It's the format you ask for when you need to show something tomorrow, not next month, and it usually ends up on a website homepage, in an email to investors or at the opening of a sales proposal.

What a sizzle reel is and what it's for
A sizzle reel is not an aftermovie or an editorial summary. An aftermovie explains what happened at an event with some narrative and usually runs three or four minutes, with testimonials and context. A sizzle reel sells a feeling in 30 to 90 seconds, with fast cuts, punchy music and shots that prioritize visual impact over explanation.
It's used for sales pitches, for a website homepage, for social media on the day of the event or to open an internal presentation. The key is that it needs no prior context: someone who wasn't there has to understand what it's about in the first ten seconds, without relying on a narrator to explain it.
Many brands record several events a year and end up with hours of footage nobody opens again. A sizzle reel solves that: it turns that material into a 60-90 second piece that can be reused on social media, in a sales proposal or in the annual report, without having to produce a new video from scratch every time.
How to shoot a sizzle reel that works
Define the channel first
A sizzle reel for social media runs 30 to 45 seconds and is vertical. One meant to open a sales presentation can reach 90 seconds and is horizontal. Deciding this before recording changes the shots you need: if you're going to cut fast for social media, you need more variety of angles per minute of actual footage.
Think about the edit before shooting
In a sizzle reel session we shoot with the final timeline in mind, not the other way around. That means also asking for cutaway shots (b-roll): hands, details, audience reactions, transitions between spaces. In the edit we work in DaVinci Resolve precisely because it allows cutting to the beat of the music with frame accuracy. Without that supporting material shot in advance, the editor has nothing to cut to quickly without the seams showing.
Prioritize moments with energy, not explanations
A speaker finishing a sentence with force is worth more than two minutes of prior context. In the studio or at an event, we look for the moments where something happens (a reaction, applause, a gesture) because they are what sustain the cutting rhythm this format demands. If there are only static shots of people talking, the reel feels flat no matter how fast you cut.

Common mistakes when shooting a sizzle reel
- Shooting only the main content, with no cutaway shots to cut between them.
- Choosing the music after shooting, instead of defining the cutting rhythm from the script or the initial brief.
- Stretching it to three or four minutes: it stops being a sizzle reel and becomes a summary nobody watches to the end.
- Not adapting the format (vertical, horizontal, square) to the channel where it will be published first.
- Closing with a brand message so long it breaks the rhythm built throughout the whole video.
- Shooting with a single fixed camera and expecting the edit to hide the lack of angles.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a sizzle reel?
Between 30 and 90 seconds. If you need more time to explain something with context, what you're probably after is an aftermovie or a corporate video, not a sizzle reel.
Is a sizzle reel useful for anything other than an event?
Yes. It works just as well for presenting a product, opening a sales proposal or summarizing a year of brand content in a single highlights video, without needing an event at all.
Do I need to record the whole event to make a good sizzle reel?
Not all of it, but enough to have variety: at least two camera angles during the key moments, plus cutaway shots of the surroundings, the audience and the details of the space.
How long does it take to deliver a sizzle reel after the event?
At A0Studios with Full Production it can be delivered in 24-48 hours if the goal is to publish it while the event still has buzz on social media. For tighter deadlines, we discuss it before recording so we can organize the editing workflow accordingly.
