Filming outdoors vs in a studio: when it pays to leave the set

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

What you gain and what you risk when filming brand content outside the studio, and how to choose between a set and an outdoor location before booking a session.

5 min readoutdoor vs studio filming

Every few months we get asked whether we can film outside the studio: in an office, on the street, on a terrace with views over Madrid. The short answer is yes, but it is not always the best option for the video you want to make.

At A0Studios we shoot most sessions on set because that is where we control light, sound and time. Going outside adds visual value, but also variables that don't depend on us. Before deciding, it helps to understand what you gain and what you risk with each option.

Why this decision matters before you shoot

Choosing between a set and an outdoor location is not an aesthetic question, it is a question of risk. A studio shoot is repeatable: if something goes wrong, you redo the shot without depending on anything external. An outdoor shoot depends on daylight, street noise, whether it rains or whether someone parks in front of your frame.

That doesn't mean outdoors is worse. A terrace with the Madrid skyline, a real office with the team working in the background or a street with context add an authenticity a studio backdrop can't give. The problem appears when the location is chosen only for looks, without planning the technical side.

How to decide between outdoors and studio

Light and weather

Natural light changes every 20-30 minutes. Shooting at noon gives harsh shadows; shooting at 6 pm in winter can leave you without light halfway through the session. On set we control light with LED panels and don't depend on the weather. If the session is outdoors, book an extra hour of buffer and have an indoor plan B in case it rains.

Sound and control of the environment

Background noise is the number one problem of filming outside the studio: traffic, construction, air conditioning, people talking. A wireless lavalier mic helps, but it doesn't fix an echoey room or a windy terrace. On set we treat the room acoustically and record clean on the first take.

Logistics, time and permits

Filming in a public space or at a client's office adds time that isn't in the script: setting up and packing down equipment, waiting for a room to free up, or asking for permission if the crew goes above two or three people with cameras. On a studio day you walk in, record and walk out without depending on third parties.

When it does pay off to leave the set

  • The brand's space is part of the message: showing a company's real office in an employer branding video adds more than a neutral backdrop.
  • The video needs recognizable urban context: an interview with Madrid behind it says something a set can't simulate.
  • The budget allows a full shooting day with room for light and sound surprises.
  • The content is a one-off (an event, an opening, a trade fair) and can't be repeated elsewhere.
  • There is backup sound gear, such as an external recorder or lavalier mics, and someone dedicated only to monitoring audio.

Frequently asked questions

Can you film outdoors with the same quality as in a studio?

With the right gear, yes, but it takes more prep time and a plan B if light or sound fails. In a studio that variable disappears because conditions are controlled in advance.

How much extra time should you plan for an outdoor shoot?

At least one hour more than on set, covering setup, travel and a buffer for weather or unexpected noise.

What happens if it rains on the day of an outdoor shoot?

If there is no indoor plan B, it gets rescheduled. That is why at A0Studios we often combine both: part of the session on set and only the shots that need real context outside.

Does A0Studios film outside the Ronda de Atocha studio?

Yes, when the project calls for it: client offices, events, outdoor locations in Madrid. Even so, we recommend assessing it case by case before ruling out the set.
