Recording ad spots in a studio: what you need to know

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

How to plan the recording of an ad spot in a studio: locked script, separate shots and campaign variants without having to reshoot anything.

When a brand decides to record an ad spot, the first doubt is almost never budget. It is format: do we shoot this in a studio, on location or mixing both? A recording studio like A0Studios settles a good part of that question before it becomes a problem on shoot day: total control of light, sound and background, with no dependence on weather or the noise of a Madrid street.

At A0Studios we record spots for brands, agencies and companies that need a real advertising finish, not a product video shot on the office phone. The difference is not only the camera. It is how the session is planned before anything is switched on.

What an ad spot in a studio is and why it differs from content video

An ad spot in a studio differs from a regular content video in three ways: a locked script, total control of the environment and a clear conversion goal from the first second. It is not recorded to spark conversation in the comments. It is recorded to sell, to position a brand or to support a media campaign with a fixed launch date.

That changes how you work. A spot allows less improvisation than a personal brand reel. Every shot is usually decided before entering the studio, because the editing margin is measured in seconds, not minutes, and every extra second in the final cut costs money in media buying.

It also raises the technical bar. A spot that will air on television, on digital screens or in paid campaigns needs image and sound quality that allows no shortcuts: consistent lighting, clean audio without background noise and a composition designed to look good both horizontally and cropped to vertical if the campaign calls for it.

How to do it well

Lock the script and storyboard before booking the studio

Before setting a date, have the script locked shot by shot, not just the general idea. At A0Studios we ask for the storyboard or at least a technical script before the session, because everything else follows from it: how many studio hours are needed, what props to bring and whether more than one camera is needed to cover different angles without repeating takes.

Plan the shoot by shots, not by scenes

A 20-30 second spot can need 15-20 different shots to give you editing room: wide shots, product close-ups, details of hands or packaging, talent reactions. Shooting with individual shots in mind, rather than complete scenes from start to finish, gives much more flexibility in editing and avoids calling the crew or talent back for a missing shot.

Leave time for campaign variants

Most campaigns need more than one version: a 30-second cut for TV or YouTube, a 15-second one for social media and a 6-second one for bumper ads. If this is decided before recording, the session can be planned to cover all the cuts with the same material. If it is decided afterwards, you almost always have to reshoot missing shots.

Common mistakes

  • Arriving at the studio without a locked script and deciding shots on the fly: it makes the session more expensive and leaves gaps in the edit.
  • Not planning the campaign's length variants before shooting: it forces reshoots of shots that were not covered.
  • Underestimating audio time: a spot with music and voice-over needs mixing and mastering, not just a video cut.
  • Shooting on location when the light and sound control of a studio would have given a cleaner, repeatable result.
  • Not asking the studio for a camera and lighting test before shoot day if the product has tricky finishes (shine, glass, metal).

Frequently asked questions

How long does a recording session for an ad spot take?

It depends on the number of shots, but a 20-30 second spot with several shots usually needs between 3 and 5 hours in the studio, not counting later editing.

Can you record a spot for several platforms in the same session?

Yes, if it is planned in advance. By recording individual shots with framing margin, you can later cut versions for TV, social media and vertical from the same material.

Do I need an actor, or can the company's own team do it?

Both options work. What matters is that whoever is on camera has the script clear and, if they lack experience, a teleprompter to keep it natural.

What is the difference between a spot and a social media content video?

A spot is designed for a specific conversion goal within a campaign with a launch date, while social media content usually follows a more continuous strategy that is less fixed in time.

If you have a campaign underway and need to record the spot in a space with total control of light and sound, tell us the script and the variants you need from /#contacto. We plan the session so the material covers every cut of the campaign without having to reshoot.
