By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

What equipment, space and lighting you need to record Reels in Madrid with a professional result, without improvising and without wasting session time.

Recording Reels in Madrid is easy. Making them look good is another story. Vertical video has been the format with the greatest organic reach on social media for years, and that has made everyone want to produce it. The problem is that you can tell almost immediately whether a Reel has visual and audio quality. There is nowhere to hide in 30 or 60 seconds.

At A0Studios we see it in every session: some people arrive with an iPhone and a clear script and make pieces that work perfectly well. Others bring expensive gear and leave with unusable material because the space was badly planned, the light did not help or the audio has too much ambient noise. Equipment matters, yes, but it is not the first thing. The first thing is the context you record in.

What you really need to record Reels in a studio

A well-produced Reel does not require a cinema camera or a crew of ten. It requires three things, in order: a good space, good light and clean audio. If you have those three, you can shoot on a Sony ZV-E10, a mid-range mirrorless or a well-configured phone and the result will look good. If you do not have all three, it does not matter how much the camera costs.

The space shapes everything else. A background with depth, real textures or an urban setting gives visual context without any editing tricks. A flat or visibly cluttered background is a problem you cannot fix in post-production without it showing. That is why the A0Studios penthouse has different background options depending on the type of Reel: a neutral backdrop, a natural-light area, a view of Madrid or a more editorial indoor setup. You do not have to adapt your content to the space: the space adapts to what you need.

How to do it right

The camera and vertical framing

For vertical video in a studio, almost any recent mirrorless camera or a smartphone with good stabilization works. What does make a difference is the lens: a prime between 24mm and 50mm equivalent gives a cleaner image with less distortion than kit zoom lenses. If you shoot on a phone, turn on the grid to center your frame properly and record in the highest quality mode available, never with digital zoom. What to avoid is recording below 1080p or using auto mode without checking the background exposure before you start.

Lighting: what affects the final result most

Light is what separates an amateur Reel from a professional one, and it is the easiest thing to underestimate. A well-placed main light source, slightly raised and about 45 degrees from the subject, gives a clean result with volume on the face. If you add a soft fill or use window light as the fill, the result improves without adding complexity to the setup. What to avoid: direct overhead light (it flattens the face), a bright window directly behind the subject without compensating the exposure, and cold fluorescent tubes with no control over direction.

Audio: the most overlooked and most critical element

Most poorly rated Reels fail because of audio, not image. A lavalier mic, a wireless system like the Rode Wireless GO II or a well-placed shotgun mic give a radically better result than the built-in microphone of any camera or phone. If you do not have an external mic, at least record in a space with little echo: rugs, sofas and textured walls absorb far better than an empty room with smooth walls. Echo does not come out well in post-production; it is much more efficient not to create it.

Common mistakes when recording Reels in a studio

  • Recording horizontally and cropping to vertical later: you lose resolution and the framing looks off in almost every case.
  • Not controlling the background light: if there is a bright window behind you, the camera exposes for the background and the subject ends up dark.
  • Using the device's own audio in echoey spaces: you notice it from the first second and it hurts the video's retention.
  • Not doing a test take before recording the whole sequence: 2 minutes of checking saves many retakes.
  • Changing the set or lighting between clips in the same session without documenting it: visual consistency across pieces in a series matters.
  • Wearing fine patterns or small prints: they cause a moiré effect on camera and look bad on screen.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best camera to record Reels in a studio?

The one you have, as long as it records at least 1080p and you can add external audio. A Sony ZV-E10, a Fujifilm X-S10 or an iPhone 15 are more than enough if the space, light and audio are well handled. The camera is rarely the bottleneck.

How many Reels can I record in a 3-hour session?

With good preparation beforehand, between 12 and 18 short clips of 30-60 seconds. If the Reels are more scripted or need a set change, the number drops. The key is to arrive with the key points of each piece already prepared, not to write them in the studio.

Do I need a locked script to record Reels?

No. 3-5 key points per piece are enough. The most natural Reels tend to be the ones that have structure but are not read word for word. If you prefer a teleprompter, we have one available at A0Studios: send us the text before the session and we will have it set up from the first minute.

Does A0Studios include recording equipment or do I need to bring my own?

We have cameras, microphones, lighting and a teleprompter available. If you have your own equipment and want to use it, that works too. What matters is that you arrive with the content planned: the technical setup adapts to what you need.

If you want to organize a session to record Reels, LinkedIn clips or any vertical format with a professional result, write to us at /#contacto. We reply the same day and can arrange a visit beforehand if you want to see the space before booking.
