Where to Record a VSL in Madrid: What to Check Before Booking a Studio

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

Where to record a VSL in Madrid without ending up with a pretty video that does not sell: audio, sales direction and common mistakes before booking a session at A0Studios.

A VSL (video sales letter) is a sales video built to sell a product or service directly, either as an ad on Meta or TikTok or as the main video on a landing page. Recording one in Madrid takes more than a studio with a good image: you need clean audio, steady lighting and, above all, direction with a sales mindset. At A0Studios we record VSLs for founders and marketing teams in a penthouse at Rda. de Atocha 16, five minutes from Atocha Renfe metro, with Sony cameras, professional sound, fixed lighting and a teleprompter for long scripts. Dani Acero, a filmmaker who also runs ad campaigns, directs the session. A VSL usually runs from 90 seconds to 4 minutes. There is one session per day and the quote is tailored, either turnkey (editing and delivery in 24-48 hours) or recording only. We reply in under an hour.

Madrid has plenty of studios to record something with a good image. What is scarce is direction with a sales mindset: someone who knows which sentence to cut, which take holds attention and which closing line seals the deal without sounding like an ad. Choosing where to record your VSL is choosing who directs you, not just which camera they use.

What a VSL is and why it matters where you record it

A well-made VSL combines a sales script, presence on camera and a production that does not distract from the message. It is used as a Meta Ads or TikTok Ads creative, as the main video of a landing page, or as the opening of a sales webinar. The usual length runs from 90 seconds to 4 minutes, depending on whether it is a short ad or a long sales piece.

The place where you record affects three things: the audio (an untreated room shows in any VSL with the voice up front), the real production time (setting up lights and camera in an office takes more than it seems) and, above all, the direction during recording. A VSL is recorded in short takes with adjustments of tone and pace between takes, and that requires someone who directs with a sales mindset, not just an image mindset.

At A0Studios we record VSLs for founders and marketing teams at Ronda de Atocha 16, in the heart of Madrid. The difference is not the penthouse: it is that the person directing the session has made ads that sold, and can tell a take that convinces from one that only looks good.

How to record a VSL well

Clean audio, no room echo

A VSL lives or dies on its audio. If the voice sounds like an empty room, the viewer notices in the first seconds and leaves. We record with a lavalier or shotgun microphone depending on the shot, in a room with acoustic treatment, never in a meeting room with glass walls and a table that bounces every word.

Sales direction, not just camera direction

Before recording, we read the script aloud and mark where the hook goes, where the social proof comes in and where the offer closes. During the recording I direct each take thinking about which sentence needs more emphasis and what can be cut in the edit, just as I would direct a paid ad, because many times that is exactly what it is.

Lighting and framing that do not distract from the message

A VSL does not need a complex visual setup. It needs light that does not change tone between takes and a stable frame that keeps the focus on the person speaking. We use a fixed 2-3 light setup and short-focal-length lenses so the face fills the frame without distortion.

Common mistakes when recording a VSL

  • Recording in an office with echo and fluorescent light that changes tone between takes.
  • Reading the script word for word without pauses, which sounds robotic and lowers conversion.
  • Not recording backup takes for the key sentences of the offer.
  • Confusing image direction with sales direction: looking good is not the same as selling.
  • Arriving without having tested the script aloud, which lengthens the session and tires the speaker.
  • Not leaving room to redo the close of the offer, which is usually the part that gets repeated most.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a VSL recording session?

Between 2 and 3 hours for a script of up to 4 minutes, including retakes and tone adjustments. If the script has several versions, for example different hooks to test on Meta Ads, it can stretch to half a day.

Do I need to bring my own script?

Yes, or at least a clear outline of the sales argument: hook, problem, solution, social proof, offer and close. We help adjust it in the room, but the sales structure is defined by the person who knows the product.

Can more than one version of the VSL be recorded in the same session?

Yes. It is common to record 2-3 variations of the opening hook to test in Meta or TikTok Ads campaigns, keeping the rest of the script the same.

Does the studio include VSL editing?

It depends on the service: Recording Only delivers the raw footage, Recording + Editing includes the edit ready to publish, and Full Production adds script and strategic direction from scratch.
