Renting a Studio vs Hiring Content Direction: The Real Difference

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

Renting a room and hiring content direction are not the same thing, and mixing them up gets expensive when what you shoot has to sell. What each option includes and how to know which one you need.

4 min readdifference between renting a studio and hiring content direction

When someone writes to us looking for a recording studio in Madrid, they almost always ask about price and availability. Rarely do they ask who will direct the session. And that's the difference that weighs most on the result: renting a space and hiring content direction are not the same thing, even if both are advertised as a "studio".

At A0Studios we see both situations every week. People who book the room thinking the penthouse does the work, and people who arrive looking for someone who knows what to shoot and why. If you're going to shoot something that has to sell, such as an ad, a VSL or social content with a real goal, that difference isn't a nuance: it decides whether the video works.

What each one is and why they get confused

Renting a studio means booking square metres: a room, lighting already set up, sometimes a technician who presses record. You arrive with the script decided, you know what you'll say and in what order, and you leave with raw footage to edit afterwards. It's a space service, not a judgement service.

Hiring content direction is different. Someone reviews the script before the session, decides how many takes each block needs, shapes the hook for the first seconds and, if the video is going to ads, which variants are worth shooting to test. It isn't directing for aesthetics, it's directing with a sales mindset: knowing what has worked in real ads, not just what looks good on camera.

The confusion comes from many studios advertising "production" when what they actually sell is a room and a camera operator. There's nothing wrong with that (sometimes it's exactly what you need), but you should know what you're paying for before you book, not find out during the session.

How to do it right

What renting just the space includes

At A0Studios this is the Recording Only service: room, fixed lighting, backdrop and a technician who operates the camera. You bring the script, topic and order already decided. It works well if you already have experience recording, if you have a marketing team behind you that knows what it needs, or if the format is simple and doesn't depend on much direction in the session.

What changes when there is content direction

With Recording + Editing or Full Production, someone steps into the script before the session starts. You decide what to film first, how many takes each block needs and, if the goal is an ad, which 2 or 3 hook variants to shoot so you have something to test on Meta or TikTok. It's direction aimed at results, not just framing. It's the same approach we use in sessions with brands like IFEMA or the Madrid Chamber of Commerce: shooting well isn't enough, you need to know what will be done with each piece before turning the camera on.

How to know which one you need

Ask yourself who will decide what gets said and in what order. If the answer is "me, I'm clear on it", the space alone is enough. If the answer is "I'm not sure what to film first" or "I want this to convert, not just look good", you need direction, not just a room. Mixing the two expectations is what makes a session run long or leaves footage that doesn't serve what was really needed.

A real example: if you arrive with a finished, approved corporate script, Recording Only is all you need. If you arrive with the idea of "I need content to sell more" but don't know how many pieces or what format, that's where direction makes the difference between leaving with loose clips or with something you can actually launch.

Common mistakes

  • Booking a studio without a script, thinking you'll improvise in the room: it shows in the result and wastes paid time.
  • Asking for "full production" without asking what the direction exactly includes, only the price.
  • Shooting for ads without anyone planning which hook or length variants are worth testing.
  • Choosing a studio only for how nice the space looks, without checking who directs the session.
  • Thinking content direction is only for big brands: it also pays off in a single founder session.
  • Arriving without knowing whether you need one piece or five, which throws off the booked studio time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent just the space at A0Studios without direction?

Yes. Recording Only is exactly that: room, lighting and camera technician. You bring the script and decide what gets recorded.

How much does it cost to add content direction to a session?

It depends on whether it's Recording + Editing or Full Production, and on the goal of the video. There isn't a single rate: we confirm it based on how many pieces you need and for which channel.

Does content direction work the same for organic and for ads?

The approach changes. For ads we look for a strong hook and testable variants. For organic we look for naturalness and pacing that retains viewers without sounding like an ad.

Do I need direction if I already have a marketing team?

It depends on whether your team knows what's needed on camera, not just in strategy. Often the strategy is clear but nobody has directed a recording session before.

If you're not sure which of the two options you need, tell us in /#contacto what you're going to shoot and what the video is for. We'll tell you what fits, just the space or full direction, before you book the room.
