How to optimize a podcast session to get social media clips

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

Structure, timing and recording techniques to turn a 60-minute podcast session into 15 or 20 clips ready to publish on LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube.

Recording a podcast and cutting clips for social media later is not the same as recording a podcast. They are two things that need to be planned together from the start, unless you want to spend 3 hours editing a 30-second clip that ends up fitting no format at all.

At A0Studios we have seen that clients who plan the session with clips in mind leave with 15 or 20 pieces ready to publish directly. Those who do not plan leave with a 90-minute recording they then do not know how to cut. The difference is structure, not luck.

Why a podcast session is the best source of clips

A 60-minute video podcast can yield 3 weeks of social content if you know what to look for. Punchy statements, changes of mind, moments where the guest says something unexpected: those 30 seconds are the ones that stop the scroll.

The problem is that if you record without thinking about this, the best lines end up buried among tangents and silences. And the editor has to hunt for nuggets in a very large field.

If instead you structure the conversation so those moments appear at predictable points in the recording, cutting clips drops from hours to minutes.

How to structure the session to get clips

Open with a positioning statement

The first thing the guest (or you) says should be a clear, powerful statement. Not "hi, how are you", but "I have been in content marketing for 10 years and most of what is taught is wrong". That line, with the right edit, is a clip. If you do not open that way, you will have to find one somewhere else.

Design 8-10 minute blocks with their own closing

Structure the conversation in thematic blocks, not a single continuous thread. Each block should have its own mini-conclusion. That way you can cut a whole block as one piece or pull out its closing line. With 6 blocks in a 60-minute session you already have 6 potential clips of 2-3 minutes, plus the strong moments within each.

Prepare questions designed for short answers

Some questions generate 5-minute answers and some generate 45-second answers. "Tell me your story" is a 5-minute one. "What is your number one piece of advice for someone starting out" is a 45-second one, perfect for a LinkedIn clip. Prepare 4 or 5 of those short-answer questions and spread them throughout the session.

Mistakes that waste editing time

  • Recording without knowing which platform the clips are for: vertical and horizontal are not the same and affect the framing from the start.
  • Not marking key moments during recording. One marker on the timeline saves 20 minutes of review later.
  • Leaving in every conversational tic: the "like", "well", "um" that break the rhythm of the clip.
  • Forgetting that a clip has to work without prior context. If it cannot be understood on its own, it does not work on social media.
  • Recording without separate audio tracks. Without independent channels you cannot clean up the sound properly afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How many clips can I get from a 60-minute podcast session?

It depends on the structure, but with proper planning between 10 and 20 clips in varied formats: 30-second cuts for Instagram and TikTok, 2-3 minute cuts for LinkedIn and YouTube Shorts, and a few 5-minute ones for the main YouTube channel.

Do I need to record vertically for social clips?

Not necessarily. At A0Studios we record horizontally with well-framed cameras and reframe to vertical in editing. If the original framing leaves room above and below, the reframe works well without losing important information.

At what point in the podcast are the best clips usually found?

In the first 10 minutes and the last 15. The beginning because the guest tends to get to the point before relaxing. The end because that is when the most direct conclusions and the densest punchlines come out.

What tools are used to cut podcast clips?

For editing the clip itself, DaVinci Resolve or Premiere. For automatic subtitles, CapCut or Opus Clip. For organizing and previewing before publishing, Frame.io or a well-structured folder by platform and format.

If you plan to record a podcast and want to leave with clips ready for several weeks, tell us about the project from /#contacto. We will give you a session planned from the start so editing is minimal and the material is maximal.
