Camera for recording branded content: what to look at beyond resolution

By Dani Acero, Founder & Filmmaker

Which camera to use for branded content: why resolution is not the first thing to check and which factors make the biggest difference in the final result.

When someone contacts us to record branded content, the first question is almost always which camera we will use. It makes sense: it is what you see, what you touch, what shows up in the specs. But after more than two years recording in the penthouse, the camera is almost never what decides whether a video looks professional.

At A0Studios we do shoot with professional-grade gear, but the real jump in quality comes from elsewhere: how the camera focuses on moving subjects, which lens is mounted, how the video sounds and which delivery format you are preparing it for. This guide covers exactly that: what to look at before you buy or rent a camera for branded content.

What really changes the result of a video

Most branded content is watched on a phone, often in 1080p even if it was shot in 4K. That means chasing more resolution has very low returns past a certain point. Viewers cannot tell 4K from 6K on a 6-inch screen, but they do notice if the image is out of focus for two seconds or the audio sounds tinny.

What you do notice, and a lot, is autofocus when there is movement, stabilization when you are not using a tripod, exposure when the light changes mid-take, and audio at all times. Those four factors weigh more on perceived quality than any resolution number on the camera box.

That is why at A0Studios we prioritize gear that handles those four points well over gear that just adds megapixels. A mid-range camera that is well set up, with good audio and good light, beats a high-end camera used badly.

How to do it right

Autofocus and stabilization, not resolution

If you are going to talk to camera, move around a space or follow someone, eye or subject tracking autofocus makes more difference than any other spec. Cameras like the Sony A7 IV or the A7S III handle this very well, which is why they are among the most used in branded content production: not because they shoot 4K, but because they do not lose focus when the person moves.

Delivery format: what the video will be used for

Before you look at the camera, define where the video will live. If it is for Reels or Shorts, you need vertical and a frame designed for it from minute one, not a last-minute crop of the horizontal. If it is for the web or YouTube, horizontal rules. Shooting in the wrong format and cropping later loses effective resolution and usually ruins the framing you composed for the camera.

Lenses and depth of field

A good lens does more for the image than changing camera bodies. For a shot of a person talking, a 35mm or 50mm equivalent with a wide aperture separates the subject from the background and gives that polished-production feel. An expensive camera with a kit lens looks worse than a modest camera with a well-chosen fast lens.

Common mistakes when choosing a camera

  • Prioritizing resolution (4K, 6K, 8K) over autofocus and stabilization.
  • Buying the camera body without budgeting for a decent lens to go with it.
  • Not testing the camera's real audio before an important shoot.
  • Recording in a codec or format that complicates editing and lengthens delivery times.
  • Switching cameras between pieces of the same campaign for no reason, which breaks visual consistency.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a high-end camera to record branded content?

Not necessarily. Mid-range gear with good autofocus, a good lens and good audio usually gives better results than an expensive camera that is badly set up or poorly supported.

Which camera do you use at A0Studios?

We work with Sony A7 bodies, chosen for their reliable autofocus and video performance, combined with fast lenses depending on the type of shot each session needs.

Is it better to shoot in 4K even if the video will be uploaded in 1080p?

It helps if you need room to crop or stabilize in editing, but it is not essential. If you have to choose between 4K with poor autofocus or 1080p with good autofocus, 1080p wins in perceived quality.

Can I bring my own camera to a session at A0Studios?

Yes. We can shoot with your gear, with ours, or combine both depending on what each piece needs. We discuss it before the session so we can prepare the set accordingly.

If you are unsure what gear your next session needs, tell us what content you want to record from /#contacto. We will tell you whether it makes sense to bring your camera, use ours or combine both.
